Weddle vs. Smith in the 2012 Pro Bowl

Steve Smith dubbed himself "Little Playmaker, University of Utah" in the video introductions for NFL games this season, and the nickname fit. Especially in yesterday's Pro Bowl, where Smith was the leading receiver for the NFC, catching 5 passes for 118 yards and a TD. His teammate Cam Newton didn't fare as well in his first appearance, throwing 3 interceptions - two of them into the hands of Eric Weddle, another little playmaker. Weddle, who was tied for the league lead in interceptions this year, returned the first one 63 yards and pitched the second pick over to Derrick Johnson, who took it 60 yards for an AFC TD. There weren't many opportunities for Paul Soliai to make any notable plays, as the defensive line is stymied by the rules of the game, but his teammate Brandon Marshall strutted his stuff, catching 6 passes for 174 yards and a record 4 TDs on his way to the Pro Bowl MVP.

Andrew Bogut suffered another injury Wednesday, fracturing his left ankle when he landed on another player's foot. Bogut had three points, four rebounds, and three blocks in the first quarter of his 400th career game; it was an attempt to block a 4th shot that brought the big man down. Bogut plays hard around the rim - he just doesn't stick the landings. He is out indefinitely, and may miss the rest of the compressed season. Hopefully the baller is back on his feet soon.

Smith's terrific season ends.

Alex Smith led the 49ers, even in defeat. Rather than pinning the overtime loss on Kyle Williams for his fumble on a punt return, Smith kept the blame squarely on his own shoulder pads. "It's not on him. I look at the one for 13 on third downs. I know he's going to feel bad, but he's still part of our team. We didn't lose the game there. We lost it across the board offensively. We just couldn't get it done." That was the type of leadership I expected from the full-fledged QB of the Niners. It wasn't Alex's best game: 12-26, 196 yards, 2 TDs and a 97.6 rating. Smith spent most of the game scrambling, and he did gain 42 yards on 6 carries. In the end the offense could not sustain a drive when it needed to, with plays like Vernon Davis catching an 11 yard pass on 3rd-and-12. San Francisco needs to discover a receiver like Victor Cruz who can exploit the gaps when Davis is double-covered.

Paul Kruger led the Ravens in sacks with one. Out of context that may not seem too impressive, but consider the situation. The Patriots had a first down at Baltimore's 11 yard line in the first quarter when Kruger came charging around the left end to sack Brady for a 5 yard loss. The Ravens held the Pats to a field goal as a result, keeping the game within reach. The missed field goal at the end decided it, but the defense held New England to 23 points, and it started in the first quarter. Kruger had two tackles in the effort.

A Super Bowl rematch of New England and New York features no ProUte players, as Christian Cox has been on IR since the first game of the preseason.

It's Miller (Over) Time

Andre Miller led one of his former teams (Denver) into the arena of one of his other former teams (Philadelphia) last night, coming off the bench and coming away with the win in overtime. It was Philly's first home loss of the season, and it was apparent that Miller felt comfortable playing in his former venue. He shot 12-20 from the field, 3-4 from behind the arc, and 1-2 at the stripe for a season-high 28 points. Miller also had 10 assists, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Andre made the plays when it mattered most, hitting a driving jump shot with 7.9 seconds left in regulation to put Denver up one; after a 76ers free throw tied the score, he missed a 3 at the buzzer (his only missed 3 of the night). In overtime, Miller once again hit the Nuggets' final bucket to put them ahead 106-104, and then made the steal to seal it. Denver got two more free throws for a 108-104 victory, thanks to 'Dre!

Alex leads his team to a playoff win.

Alex Smith looked every bit the ProUte of the Year against New Orleans on Saturday! Alex was 24-42 for 299 yards and 3 TDs, including the game-winner to Vernon Davis. Smith led two game- winning drives, capping the first with a 28 TD run with 2:11 to play. After Drew Brees connected with Jimmy Graham for a 66 yard TD to retake the lead, Alex did it again. With only 1:37 on the clock, Smith drove the 49ers 85 yards (61 in the hands of Davis) for the win. When everyone expected Alex to manage the game, setting up the league's leading kicker David Akers for a tying field goal, Coach Harbaugh dialed up a play called "Vernon Post" which the team executed perfectly.

Clearly this was a team victory, and the defense played its' part, starting with the hit safety Donte Whitner laid on Pierre Thomas at the two yard line, forcing a fumble and denying the Saints an opportunity to score early. The defense and special teams came up with four turnovers in the first half, yet San Francisco only led 17-14 at the break. Defensive end Justin Smith made one of the most physical plays of the year, driving Pro Bowl tackle Jermon Bushrod back and reaching over him to drag Brees down. Brees continued his record-breaking ways, completing 40 of 63 passes for 462 yards and 4 TDs, but he also threw two interceptions, ending his own record streak of none in the past five years of post-season play. In the first post-season appearance of his career, Alex Smith did not throw an interception. He did fumble twice while being sacked, losing one of the two. Alex's passer rating for the game was 103.2, better than Brees's 93.5, and he now has a signature play to call his own, thirty years after "The Catch." Home field advantage was definitely a factor in this game; the weather in San Fran was fine (it won't be this weekend for the NFC Championship Game), but the Saints are a different team away from their dome. Credit Smith's steady hand all season long for earning that advantage, and for using it to advance as a player and as a team.

In the other playoff match ups, Brice McCain (no stats) and the Texans couldn't overcome the rookie mistakes of their quarterback, falling to the Ravens and Paul Kruger (no stats). Tim Tebow was no match for Tom Brady, as the Patriots overwhelmed the Broncos. Zane Beadles had his name mentioned for a personal foul on a rushing TD early on, and OC Mike McCoy's name has been mentioned as a candidate for the head coach position in Miami.

He's Back, and This Time it's Personal

Buck to the bucket.

Actually it was personal reasons that caused Andrew Bogut to miss four games, but he's back from Aussie land. In his return he scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists to help the Bucks beat the Spurs, 106-103.

Andre Miller stepped in to the starter role when Ty Lawson wasn't able to go against the Nets and had one of his better games this season. Miller put up a dozen points and a dozen assists against Deron Williams (16 and 13, respectively), as Denver outscored New Jersey, 123-115. The Nuggets are 7-4, good for 5th place in the West, whereas the Bucks are 3-6 (with Bogut missing nearly half of those games), landing them in 11th place in the East.

Following our third year of awarding the ProUte of the Week, we had three standout candidates for the first ProUte of the Year Award:

Alex Smith, QB, 49ers: 3,150 yards passing, 17 TDs, 5 INTs, 90.7 rating.
Smith is having easily the best season of his hit-or-miss career in San Francisco. The 49ers are 13-3 and secured the second seed in the NFC playoffs. That's huge, as it means the game against the Saints will be in the Bay Area, not the Bayou. Smith's numbers don't jump out of the screen, except for his career-low 5 interceptions. With Smith managing the offense for new coach Jim Harbaugh, the 2011 49ers tied the 2010 Patriots for the fewest turnovers (10) in a season since 1941. Smith is no stranger to criticism, but labeling him a "game manager" is not a slam. He won't break 5,000 yards in a season like Tom Brady, but he can limit the interceptions in the face of taking more sacks (44) than any other quarterback in the league. The 49ers wouldn't be in this situation without their defense or their running game, but it was Smith, a free agent, who kept the team together during the lockout. He led the team workouts in lieu of the new coaching staff, and it shows in San Fran's success this season.

Eric Weddle, FS, Chargers: 88 tackles, 12 PDefs, 7 INTs.
After the lockout was lifted, Weddle signed a new contract making him the highest-paid safety in the league. The one thing he was asked to add to his arsenal at the time was more interceptions. Weddle earned his new salary, pulling in 7 takeaways to tie for the lead in the NFL. The other two players with 7 interceptions were both cornerbacks; that indicates that Weddle can stuff the run with the best of them and cover the pass with the best of them. His skill set is finally gaining recognition with fans, as he was voted to his first Pro Bowl, and with the league, as he was named to the All Pro team on Friday. Weddle was the only All-ProUte in 2011. He is the highest paid because he is one of the best.

Steve Smith, WR, Panthers: 79 receptions, 1,394 yards, 7 TDs.
Which came first, the emergence of Cam Newton, or the re-emergence of Steve Smith? Smith was the primary receiver once again in Carolina, and he played like it. His drive to catch the ball is undeniable, regardless of coverage. He doesn't have the physical gifts of a Calvin Johnson or a 5,000+ yard passer with multiple options like Wes Welker, the two guys ahead of him on the All Pro list. What he has is the desire to go get the ball, and he turned in one of the best seasons of his career. Smith was voted to the Pro Bowl as a reserve, his fifth selection (and first since 2008). Smith is a viable candidate for Comeback Player of the Year as well as ProUte of the Year.

It's a difficult choice, which is exactly what we want to see from these professional players. Is a QB with the fewest INTs in the league more deserving than a safety with the most INTs in the league? Is one Smith's best season ever better than another Smith's great season in a great career? Should it go to the only player to be named All Pro or the player who won more ProUte of the Week Awards?

Alex Smith plunges in for a rushing TD and greatness.

Ultimately the honor goes to the former #1 pick, Alex Smith. As his coach continues to point out, Smith's composure under fire (sometimes from his own team's fan base) has been incredible. After losing another head coach and going into the lockout as a free agent, with the 49ers drafting a quarterback in the second round, Smith could have split, but he didn't. He got a copy of Coach Harbaugh's playbook, studied it quickly, gave it back, and ran the team's off-season preparations. His comeback victory at Philadelphia was a showcase of his ability and his character. In his seventh season in the league he worked with his seventh offensive coordinator, and the system finally fits his style of play. Smith now has more TDs than INTs for his career, and he has the 49ers back in the post-season for the first time in nearly a decade. Alex Smith had an amazing 2011, and he's still playing into 2012. For that impressive performance Alex Smith is our ProUte of the Year.

68 Wildcard Pickup

Three ProUtes who wear #68 were in action during Wildcard Weekend: Chris Kemoeatu, Jonathan Fanene, and Zane Beadles. But they weren't the only ProUtes in the first round of the playoffs: Brice McCain, Stevenson Sylvester, and Denver OC Mike McCoy were also battling to get their respective teams to the next round. McCain didn't record any stats, but he played slot coverage for the Texans in their 31-10 dismantling of the Bengals; Fanene registered 6 tackles for Cincinnati, although he couldn't quite complete the one seen here. McCain and the Texans move on to face Paul Kruger and the Ravens (David Reed is on injured reserve) in the second round.

The Broncos prevailed in an overtime thriller against the Steelers, as McCoy's offense racked up 447 yards on the vaunted Steelers D, which was held without a sack by Beadles and the boys. Pittsburgh's o-line couldn't say the same thing, as Roethlisberger's limited mobility opened the door for five sacks. Sly didn't record any stats for the injury-depleted Steelers. Denver moves on to face New England next. Beadles will be the only 68 to advance, while Alex Smith will see his first playoff action when the Saints march into San Francisco.

Carolina Closes It Out

Carolina closed out the season with its third ProUte of the Week Award recipient - in Week 17 it was R.J. Stanford's turn to make a big play. The Saints led 14-7 when Drew Brees threw this red zone interception to Stanford, who took it back 53 yards in the other direction. This turnover offset a fumble by Steve Smith, but the Panthers ultimately succumbed to the Saints, 45-17. Stanford had two tackles and a PDef in addition to the INT. Smith also had a decent game (minus the fumble), with 6 receptions for 86 yards and a TD. With that performance Smith broke the franchise-record for receptions, previously held by Muhsin Muhammad.

Alex Smith had another nice day, completing 21 of 31 passes for 219 yards and a TD; he also ran for a TD as the 49ers wrapped up the #2 seed in the NFC playoffs. Brice McCain had another nice outing against the Titans, accumulating 2 tackles and 3 PDefs. Tennessee edged Houston by a point, but the Texans had already clinched the #3 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Left Side, Strong Side

Stewart runs (and runs well) off a block by Jordan Gross (#69)

Jordan Gross may not have been named to the Pro Bowl, but he is our ProUte of the Week. The Panthers offense romped all over the injury-depleted Buccaneers defense, and Gross led the way. Of Carolina's 433 total yards, 270 came on the ground. Carolina fired on all cylinders: Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, Cam Newton - even Steve Smith got in on the action with this 23 yard end around. Newton broke Peyton Manning's rookie passing record, yet he only had 171 yards in this game (91 on a single play, the longest in franchise history). Smith only caught one ball for nine yards, as many key starters sat out the fourth quarter.

Gross is one of those key starters the Panthers can't function without. He manhandled rookie Adrian Clayborn at the point of attack, springing Stewart (and others) for the scamper seen here. Smith's run went away from the left-side anchor, but Gross still made a key block in the backfield to ward off the backside pursuit. The Panthers averaged an astounding 8.7 yards per rush and 9.1 per pass, scoring on eight of the first nine possessions. You don't get production like that without a dominating performance by your offensive line, which gave up one sack on the day.

Gross kept the award in Carolina for another week, despite the best efforts of Brice McCain (7 tackles, 2 PDef), Eric Weddle (6 tackles, 2 PDef), and Jonathan Fanene (2 tackles, 2 sacks) to wrest it away.

Injury update: Koa Misi was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Pro Bowl Bound

Steve Smith and Eric Weddle won't be going to the playoffs this year, but they will be going to the Pro Bowl! The NFL announced the rosters for the Pro Bowl last night, with Smith and Weddle listed as reserves for the NFC and AFC, respectively. It will be Smith's fifth Pro Bowl appearance - the first since 2008 - and Weddle's first trip. He talked about earning his first selection on the Chargers Blog.

Smith will be joined by one of his offensive linemen, but it isn't Jordan Gross. At least one blogger on ESPN.com thought that Gross was more deserving of the honor than Jermon Bushrod from the Saints. New Orleans, the team Carolina plays at the conclusion of the regular season, still has a shot at the Super Bowl, which might open the door for Gross to make another trip to Hawaii.

It would be nice to see Alex Smith get recognized for his performance this season, but there are more prolific quarterbacks in the NFC; at this point he isn't listed among the alternates from the 49ers. With a first-round bye and San Fran's suffocating defense, Alex just might have a shot at the Super Bowl as well!

Back in Blue

The NBA is back, and Andre Miller is back in a blue Nuggets uniform. With the lockout shortening the season Miller began his second stint with the Nuggets last night. Denver traveled to Dallas and defeated the defending champs, 115-93. Miller came off the bench to play 27 quality minutes, in which he scored 18 points on 6-8 shooting (2-2 on 3 pointers) from the floor and 4-4 shooting from the line. Miller also led the team in assists with 5 and added 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and a blocked shot to his stat line. Not bad for an old hand - maybe he will add Sixth Man of the Year to his list of accomplishments!

Andrew Bogut was productive in his first game back on the hardwood, shooting 7-14 FGs and 3-4 FTs for 17 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in a one point loss (96-95) at Charlotte.

Smith's Smooth Moves

Steve Smith showed he's still got the moves, slipping right by Johnathan Joseph for this seamlessly smooth touchdown. It was one of two 26 yard receptions on the day for Smith, who totaled 5 catches for 82 yards and the score. The resurgent receiver has 1,299 yards and 6 TDs in his 11th season in the league.

While Steve Smith put on the moves, Alex Smith showed the poise on Monday Night Football as the lights went out in Candlestick Park and so did the Pittsburgh pass rush. Alex was not sacked at all in this game (he's been sacked an NFL-high 39 times this season), and he completed 18 of 31 passes for 187 yards and a TD on a well-executed play-action fake.

On the other side of the ball, Eric Weddle had 4 tackles and a PDef, while Jonathan Fanene had a tackle, a sack, and a PDef.

Sione Seals It With a Safety

Sione Pouha tackled Jackie Battle in the end zone for a safety in the fourth quarter, sealing the Jets' victory over the Chiefs and the ProUte of the Week award in the process. Pouha also had three tackles and this sack of Tyler Palko, bringing back fond memories of the 2005 Fiesta Bowl!

The big fella beat out Eric Weddle, who had 3 tackles, a PDef, and his seventh INT of the season (putting him in a three-way tie for first in the NFL); Sean Smith, who also had a PDef and an INT to go with one tackle; and Steve Smith, who caught six balls for 125 yards.

Practice squad update: Robert Johnson was signed to the 53 man roster of the Titans after safety Anthony Smith was placed on injured reserve.

Fly By Sly

It's tough to pass over Alex Smith when he posted a career-high 142.3 rating, or Eric Weddle after the play he made on this interception (he's tied for second most in the NFL), but we're going to give the ProUte of the Week to Stevenson Sylvester for forcing a fumble on a kick return. Sly doesn't get nearly the amount of playing time as Alex or Eric, so he has to make a big impact any time he's on the field. That's exactly what he did on this fly by forced fumble! Sylvester also made a tackle in the game. Weddle made four, although he missed a tackle on a tackle, and a PDef. Smith was 17-23 for 274 yards and 2 TDs.

Sean Smith caught a Romo and the ProUte of Week 12 Award. It was Smith's first interception of a trying season (although it was Romo's second pick of the first quarter). Sean added two tackles and a PDef in the Thanksgiving Day game, which was decided by a last-second field goal.

Smith's interception put him ahead of Eric Weddle, who had more tackles (7) and a PDef of his own.

You can't cover greatness!

Steve Smith didn't go for big yards in week 11 - just 41 on 5 receptions - but he did score a touchdown and a two point conversion. His TD (after illegal contact) put the Panthers up 9-0 on the Lions in the first quarter, while his two point conversion tied the game 35-35 in the fourth quarter. Carolina's defense (and Cam Newton's second INT) couldn't keep the Panthers in the game after that, but Steve Smith keeps making big plays. Everyone knows Newton is looking for him in the end zone, but there's nothing Eric Wright can do about it!

Smith picks up another ProUte of the Week award for his playmaking ability ahead of Alex Smith (20-38, 267 yds, 2 TDs, INT), Eric Weddle (5 tackles), and Sione Pouha (7 tackles).

Mike McCoy's offense isn't pretty these days in Denver, but you can't argue with results. The focus is all on Tim Tebow of course, but he better be splurging on a sumptuous dinner for his offensive line! Denver was down to a third-string running back, yet managed 244 yards rushing in Kansas City. The Chiefs had no sacks on Tebow (only attempting eight passes had something to do with that), and the Broncos ground out the yards on the ground. We are recognizing Zane Beadles as our ProUte of the Week for making that curtailed offense go. What will he be able to do against last week's ProUte Sione Pouha and the Jets defense on Thursday night?

FUMMMBLE!

This week's ProUte Sione Pouha used his head to jar the ball loose from Fred Jackson (watch the replay), and a teammate covered it up. Pouha had seven tackles as the Jets held the league's leading rusher under 100 yards rushing and won the division match up.

Pouha's considerable effort edged out the consistent play of Alex Smith, the combined returns of David Reed, and the collected fumble and half-sack of Paul Kruger.

Eyes on the Prize

Eric Weddle upped his game on Monday Night Football, taking away two interceptions and another ProUte of the Week award. Let's see Brice McCain beat that! Weddle had 7 tackles and 2 PDef in addition to the pair of picks. That stat line edged out Paul Kruger, who had two sacks and two tackles. Both players doubled their production from the week before. The two Smiths continued their productive seasons: Alex was 15-24 for 177 yards and a TD, and Steve had another 7 receptions for 100 yards and a TD. Alex ran four times for 22 yards, while Steve ran once for 12.

Honorable mention goes to Stevenson Sylvester, who made his first start for the Steelers, and R.J. Stanford, who saw his first action of the season and got in on a couple of assisted tackles.

Finders Keepers

Look what I found!

Tennessee's receiver didn't want to catch the ball, but when it bounced to Houston defensive back Brice McCain he knew what to do with it. He zigged and zagged his way through a crowd en route to a 38 yard INT return for a TD to cap the Texans' 41-7 victory over the Titans. The win gave Houston first place in the AFC South, and the play gave Brice McCain his first ProUte of the Week Award!

McCain wasn't the only ProUte to snag an interception this week - Eric Weddle also made a pick at the goal line against the Jets. Weddle had more tackles than McCain (6 to 3), and his pick prevented points, but McCain converted his INT into six points. Each of them also had a PDef. Dolphins' DB Sean Smith did not have an INT or a PDef this week, but he did have 7 tackles against the Broncos. Seven was the number for S. Smith in Week 7, as Steve Smith had 7 catches for 143 yards (and one carry for six more).

Koa Misi bringing down Tom Brady last season.

Koa Misi's second season with the Miami Dolphins (0-5) has not started as well as his rookie season did. The former second round pick has been in a sack slump, according to this article by Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. That changed on Monday, when Misi sacked Mark Sanchez. It's a bit of stretch to name him the ProUte of the Week for his three tackles, one sack in a 24-6 loss to the Jets, but any hit on Sanchez is worth mentioning.

The article by Jackson also mentions the struggles of Sean Smith, another second round pick now in his third season. He did not break out of his slump against the Jets, but Paul Soliai contributed three tackles for his franchise tag.

This week the Dolphins will host Tim Tebow on "Gator Day," no less. Hopefully he will receive a warm welcome from Koa and crew.

A late hit after Steve Smith crossed the goal line led to a scuffle.

Even after Alex Smith led the 49ers to a comeback victory over the Eagles, not everyone was sold on his performance. At least one detractor predicted he would follow it up with a 3 INT game the next week. Instead Alex turned in the most proficient performance by an NFL quarterback this season, posting a rating of 127.2 and a total QBR of 98.2. Granted he only threw for 170 yards, but that was because San Francisco got out to an early lead. Alex opened the game 6-of-7 and finished 11-of-19 with 3 TDs and no turnovers. He has been a stud in back-to-back weeks and has earned back-to-back ProUte of the Week awards. Alex has earned two awards in each of the past three seasons, but this is the first time he has won it back-to-back.

Honorable mention goes to Steve Smith for his three catches, 79 yards, and a TD, and to the O-Line: Caleb Schlauderaff (first start with the Jets), Jordan Gross (162 yards rushing, 1 sack, 58% conversion on third down), and Zane Beadles (162 yards rushing, 0 sacks). Chris Kemoeatu did not play in one of the better performances by Pittsburgh's o-line (174 yards rushing, 1 sack, 58% 3rd down conversions).

Alex Smith brought the 49ers - and his career? - back from the brink against the Eagles, leading his team to a 24-23 victory in Philadelphia. After falling behind 23-3, Smith kept his composure and played like a seasoned veteran, completing 13 of 17 passes for 201 yards and 2 TDs in the second half. He got plenty of help from his running back, his defense, and Philly's rookie kicker, but Alex played a fine game. Smith finished 21-33 for 291 yards and 2 TDs, with 2 fumbles (one lost). His QB rating for the game was 112.1; through the first four games of the season his rating is 97.7. For his performance under pressure Alex earned the ProUte of the Week Award over some stiff competition. Eric Weddle had 8 tackles, a PDef, and an INT, Sione Pouha had 8 tackles and recovered a fumble, and Steve Smith caught 8 passes for 181 yards.

With the NBA lockout dragging on and threatening the 2011-12 season many players are beginning to look overseas for opportunities to play. It makes sense then that Andrew Bogut would return to his native Australia to play, but alas, his deal with the Sydney Kings has been scuttled by a lack of insurance. Bogut's agent David Bauman told ESPN.com that Bogut's remaining contract with the Bucks will prevent him from playing back home.

Jonathan Fanene's two sacks of fellow ProUte Alex Smith earned him the ProUte of Week 3. Fanene, who missed nearly all of last season with an injury, has returned with a vengeance. His 3 tackles puts him up to 12 on the season, and this fumble recovery helped him edge out Eric Weddle, who had 3 tackles, a PDef, and an INT that sealed the Chargers' win over the Chiefs. Other players considered for the award were Alex Smith (20-30, 201 yards) and Sean Smith (6 tackles, PDef).

Bend Like a Reed in the Wind

Five contenders emerged for ProUte of Week 2, but David Reed separated himself from the pack on this 77 yard kick return. Reed rolled up 123 total yards on 3 returns, making him one of the Ravens' most effective weapons on a day when the offense struggled to move the ball against Tennessee. Reed would later leave the game with a shoulder injury which has kept him out of practices this week. After missing week one for a suspension, Reed may miss week three with an injury. In week two he made kicker Rob Bironas miss!

Also in the running were the Smith brothers: Alex, Sean, and Steve, as well as Eric Weddle. Alex Smith completed 16 of 24 passes for 179 yds, 2 TDs, and an INT. He also rushed 3 times for 21 yds, but was sacked 6 times. Sean Smith had six tackles and two pass deflections while covering premier wideout Andre Johnson. Steve Smith had another big day, catching six balls for 156 yards, but he did have a fumble forced and recovered by Charles Woodson (who also intercepted Cam Newton twice, as one Heisman winner victimized another). Eric Weddle led the Chargers with 12 tackles, but he struggled in coverage against New England's big target tight ends.

Steve Smith's hands are good as new after a finger injury in Aug.

It appears rookie quarterback Cam Newton is in good hands with veteran receiver Steve Smith. Newton had a big debut with 422 yards passing and 178 of those went to Smith, who had 8 receptions and scored two touchdowns. Steve Smith is the ProUte of the Week for the season opener. Smith also garnered the quote of the week from Bill Barnwell, who writes for Grantland.com: "We would say that he hit Steve Smith for two touchdowns, but nobody's ever hit Steve Smith and lived to tell the tale."

Honorable mention goes to Alex Smith, who was 15-20 passing for 124 yards and rushed 7 times for 22 yards and a touchdown, and Jonathan Fanene, who had 6 tackles in his return from last year's season-ending injury.

It sounds like the makings of a Chuck Norris joke: C.J. Cron swings so hard he dislocates his own kneecap. Unfortunately that's what happened on Aug. 7th. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and underwent an MRI on Monday. The severity of the injury isn't known, according to this report in the L.A. Times, but it's possible that he will miss the rest of his promising rookie season. Cron was leading the Pioneer League with 13 HR and 41 RBI and batting .308 for the Orem Owlz when he went down.

Weddle Hits Paydirt

San Diego wasted no time or expense in re-signing safety Eric Weddle to a 5 year, $40 million contract. The deal includes $19 million guaranteed and a $13 million signing bonus, making Weddle the highest-paid player at his position. See Jason La Canfora's report on NFL.com for more details.

San Francisco also re-signed quarterback Alex Smith for another season as they develop draft pick Colin Kaepernick to take over the signal calling duties. Smith stands to make around $5 million this year.

Tennessee signed veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to lead the team and groom draft pick Jake Locker for the future. The move makes sense after the team announced it will part ways with Vince Young and Kerry Collins retired. The Titans couldn't go into the season with a rookie and a second-year player (Rusty Smith) at quarterback, but they also signed Brett Ratliff to a futures contract before the lockout began. Rat and Simms appear to be the odd men out with Hasselbeck coming in from Seattle.

With the NFL lockout coming to a conclusion teams can sign undrafted free agents, including six players from the University of Utah. According to Lya Wodraska's blog (see link in my blog list), Matt Asiata, Sealver Siliga, Shaky Smithson, Justin Taplin-Ross, Zane Taylor, and Eddie Wide will all get tryouts with NFL teams. The off-season has been shortened and the rules for practices have changed, meaning these players will find limited opportunities to impress new coaches. The roster limit for training camp has been increased, however, so they won't run into mandatory releases quite as quickly.

Miller was a Nugget from '03-'06

Andre Miller was part of a draft day trade that sent him back to Denver in exchange for Raymond Felton. According to an article in USA Today, Miller is pleased to be back in Denver, where he still has a home. He felt maligned by the team when he was traded to Philadelphia for Allen Iverson midway through the 2006-2007 season, but he has put that behind him. He is prepared to play behind Ty Lawson too, if that is what coach George Karl asks of him. This is not the same Nuggets team Miller played with from '03-'06; only Nene, Kenyon Martin, and Coach Karl remain from that unit. Miller's role with this team will be to provide veteran leadership to a new group of young players, including draft picks Kenneth Faried, Jordan Hamilton (also included in the trade), and Chu Chu Maduabum (acquired from the Lakers).

The question is when will Miller be able to work out with his new team, now that the NBA has entered into a lockout that could cost the league part or all of the 2011-12 season.

Who's On First

C.J. Cron became the first Utah baseball player to be selected in the first round of the MLB Draft when the Los Angeles Angels selected the slugger with the 17th pick. Cron lead the nation with a .803 slugging percentage and was third in batting average (.434). Just a junior, Cron is #1 in school history with a .396 career batting average and 198 RBIs, and was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America first team. His position? First base, naturally.

Cron will be in a unique position in the Angels' organization: he could play for the AAA-affiliate Salt Lake Bees in Spring Mobile Ballpark, where he played his home games as a Ute.

If the Chargers do eventually re-sign Weddle but not disgruntled wideout Vincent Jackson, might they trade for Weddle's fellow ProUte Steve Smith instead? Smith appears to want no part of the rebuilding effort in Carolina, and reportedly would like to be traded to the Chargers, Raiders, or Ravens. There seems to be some interest from the Chargers, but the players are stuck in a holding pattern.

The UFL made a bold move Monday, holding their draft while free agents are unable to sign with NFL teams due to the lockout. A few of the notable names that didn't get called over the weekend were called on Monday, but the UFL draft was not solely limited to players coming out of college. Case in point: the Virginia Destroyers used the 4th pick to select Martail Burnett, a defensive end out of Utah who played most recently on the practice squad for the San Francisco 49ers. Burnett and the other players drafted now face a quandary: remain in limbo, or sign with a UFL team and possibly miss an opportunity with an NFL team if and when the lockout is lifted?

Burnett was an undrafted free agent who signed on with the Minnesota Vikings before joining the 49ers. San Francisco used its first round pick on Missouri's Aldon Smith, a similar type of player. Both played defensive end in college but transition to rush linebacker in the NFL. Burnett could return to defensive end in the UFL and have more of an impact. The Virginia Destroyers will be coached by Marty Schottenheimer, so Burnett would still benefit from NFL level coaching. It is an expansion franchise, but it received the rights to the players of the now defunct Florida Tuskers, a competitive team that played in the first two UFL Championship games. Burnett's best move might be to jump ship.

Go North, Young Man

Brandon Burton was drafted as expected, albeit later than expected. Burton (pictured here beating first-round pick Jon Baldwin to the ball) was projected to go as high as the third round, but that distinction went to Utah State's Curtis Marsh instead. Burton had to wait until the fifth round to hear his name called by the Minnesota Vikings at #139 overall.

Forty picks later another Ute was drafted by a team from the NFC North. The Green Bay Packers used the first of three sixth round picks to acquire Caleb Schlauderaff at #179 overall. Schlauderaff and Sherrod (Green Bay's first round pick) will be tasked with protecting Aaron Rodgers, one of the league's best (and most concussed) quarterbacks.

Burton will also have some company with the Vikings, as they drafted a second Burton: wide receiver Stephen Burton from West Texas A&M. Minnesota also has ProUte wide receiver Freddie Brown on the practice squad.

Sealver Siliga had been projected as a late sixth or seventh round pick but he, Matt Asiata, and Zane Taylor were not drafted. Normally players in their situation would be signed as free agents following the draft, but the lockout will block that route into the league. Other possibilities might include Arena Football or the UFL in the interim.

First Round Exit

The post-season is over for Portland, as they were defeated by Dallas last night. It is the seventh time in Andre Miller's career that his team has made a first round exit. Miller played well in the series, shooting 49% from the field, 40% from 3 point range, and 79% from the foul line. He averaged 14.8 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game, with his best game coming in game 5 at Dallas. When his teammates struggled on the offensive end Miller stepped up his scoring and led the Blazers with 18 points and 7 assists. He was named the Most Dependable Player of the game by the broadcasters.

Jason Quick of The Oregonian wrote a fine profile of Miller and the origins of his determination, which has led to his longevity and productivity in the NBA. The TrailBlazers have until June 30th to exercise their option to extend Miller's longevity and productivity in Portland. Considering how the Blazers were beset by injuries this season, $7.8 million is a reasonable price for a dependable point guard who rarely misses a game.

Boones A-Blaze

Receiver Aaron Boone, who played his college ball at Kentucky, broke one team record and tied another in last night's 69-62 win against the Spokane Shock. Boone became the all-time leader in receiving yards, surpassing Siaha Burley, and tied Burley's record for most touchdown catches. He is drawing plenty of attention for his record-setting performance, but he's not the only Boone catching passes from Tommy Grady this season. Aaron's younger (and larger) brother Jason, a 6'5", 300 lb. offensive lineman sporting the unusual number 8 in order to be pass-eligible, has also caught a few balls. He doesn't have Aaron's (#1) gaudy numbers (57 catches, 699 yards, 16 TDs in five games), but he has caught 6 passes for 41 yards, including a TD in the season opener. The big fella is displaying some versatility, filling a similar role that Ed Ta'amu played last year for the AFL champion Shock.

Fellow ProUte Tommy Grady is off to a big start, completing 138 of 215 throws for 1,532 yards and 33 TDs with only 4 INTs. Gabe Long has posted 10 tackles and 2 sacks for the Blaze defense, while Corey Dodds remains on injured reserve. The Blaze are 3-2 on the season, already an improvement over last season's 2-14 record. One can only wonder how good they would be if they added a third Boone: Aaron and Jason's brother Jesse, who is Long's teammate on the Las Vegas Locos of the UFL.

7000 Club

Andre Miller had 12 assists in a 98-87 win over the Jazz last night, putting him over 7,000 for his career. Miller became the 14th player in NBA history to reach the 7,000 mark, and fittingly he did it in Utah. Miller needs 86 assists to pass Tim Hardaway for 13th all-time, and he trails another TrailBlazer great, Terry Porter, by 150. At his average of 7.2 apg he could catch Porter in roughly 21 games. Hopefully Portland makes it to the Western Conference finals so he can achieve it before a potential lockout puts it out of reach!

The playoffs are out of reach for the Milwaukee Bucks, so the season is already over for Andrew Bogut. He will rest his elbow in preparation for another surgery. Bogut only appeared in 65 games this season, but he was productive when he played. He averaged 12.8 points, 11.1 rebounds (including a career-high 27 against Miami in January), and a league-leading 2.58 blocks per game. That's right - Andrew Bogut led the league in blocks per game. Not Dwight Howard (#3 at 2.4), not Serge Ibaka (#4 at 2.37), not even the surprising JaVale McGee (#2 at 2.44), but Andrew Bogut with his sore elbow. It's Opening Day for MLB, time for our annual roll call of ProUtes in the minors. Starting with the biggest name and news: Chris Shelton signed with the New York Mets and was assigned to the Buffalo Bisons (AAA). Ryan Khoury and Stephen Fife are teammates on the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox). Brian Budrow was re-assigned to the Visalia Rawhide (Diamondbacks). Jordan Whatcott will suit up for the Clearwater Threshers (Phillies), and Jay Brossman is still on the roster for the Arkansas Travelers (Angels). Jesse Shriner worked his way through the Giants organization last year, seeing time with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Augusta GreenJackets, and the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA), but does not appear on an active roster this season.

Pro Day 2011

Utah held its Pro Day yesterday, with 18 former players participating and 20 coaches and scouts evaluating. Gil Brandt singled out Zane Taylor for his 41 reps of 225 pounds, an improvement over his top ten showing at the NFL Combine. Taylor also improved his other numbers from the combine, capitalizing on his chance to impress the offensive line coaches of the Patriots, Jets, and Seahawks. Brandon Burton improved his 40 times, running a 4.58 and a 4.50. Burton had an individual workout with the defensive backs coach of the Browns. Brandt made mention of Caleb Schlauderaff (limited by a calf strain), Sealver Siliga, and Matt Asiata, who caught the ball well. One player not invited to the combine who Brandt brought up was Eddie Wide.

Other reports have mentioned Justin Taplin-Ross, who was having a nice workout until he hurt his leg. Two players who seem to be overlooked are Jereme Brooks and Shaky Smithson. With the adjustment to the starting position of the kickoff imposed by the league kick return specialists like Brooks and Smithson may see their stock drop.

Double Take

Andre Miller followed this lob pass to Nicolas Batum to beat the Spurs with another fine performance against the same outfit. Miller scored 26 points, shooting 9 of 15 from the field and 8 of 10 from the line, to lead the Blazers past the depleted Spurs. It was Portland's second defeat of San Antonio in the past three days.

Andrew Bogut also scored 26 points last night, but he got his by different means (and with different results). Bogut was 13 of 19 from the field, a blistering 68%, but did not attempt a single free throw in the game. He also collected 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, but the Bucks were felled by the Bobcats. Milwaukee trails Charlotte in the Eastern Conference standings, two spots out of the playoffs with 9 games left to play. Portland is sitting at #6 in the Western Conference, with a game against #7 New Orleans on Wednesday.

Cage Match

The cage match between the NFL owners and the players' union might result in a lockout today, but the action in the arena is just getting started! The AFL season gets underway tonight with an in-state duel between the Philadelphia Soul and the Pittsburgh Power. The only ProUtes in the arena can be found in-state playing for the Utah Blaze. They are Jason Boone (OL), Tommy Grady (QB), and Gabe Long (DL). Corey Dodds (LB) is set to begin the season on injured reserve. The Blaze will play their season opener at home against the Tampa Bay Storm on March 17th.

NFL Combine 2011

Five ProUte hopefuls took part in drills at this year's NFL Combine: Matt Asiata (RB3), Brandon Burton (DB9), Caleb Schlauderaff (OL43), Sealver Siliga (DL47), and Zane Taylor (OL48). Of the five Taylor had the most notable performance, as his 33 reps on the bench press tied for 7th best. Burton did not distinguish himself in the individual drills, but he is listed in tier 8 of Gil Brandt's Hot 100 and will be the first Utah player drafted, possibly in the second round. Here is the breakdown of each player's prospects in the NFL:

Matt Asiata - potential back up/short yardage/goal line back; could go in the 7th round.
ProUte comparison: Quinton Ganther, Titans 7th round pick (246th)

David Reed has resolved his possession of marijuana case, according to the National Football Post. Rather than having a trial yesterday Reed entered a plea other than guilty or not guilty and the case was closed last week. The Ravens have not disciplined him, and it is unlikely that the NFL will level any punishment.

I have been unable to find an update on Quinton Ganther's DUI case, which was to be continued on Sept. 1st, 2010. Legal trouble did not prevent him from signing with the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 8th; he finished out the season and remains on the active roster.

Paul the Plug

The impasse over the collective bargaining agreement has not put a halt to all negotiations in the NFL; Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has reported that the Miami Dolphins are having active discussions with Paul Soliai and his agent, David Canter. In his fourth season Soliai provided the impasse the Dolphins needed for their 3-4 defense, effectively plugging up the middle against the run. Miami wants to keep Paul the Plug in place, and may use the franchise tag to do so. Soliai would like a multiyear deal that exceeds the five-year, $20.5 million contract his fellow defensive lineman Randy Starks signed in 2008, while the team has tendered one year offers. One hindrance is the 30 percent rule, which would limit Soliai's pay to 30 percent more than the $467,000 he made last season. The two sides could skirt around that hitch with a large signing bonus, but how large of a bonus should a team give a large man who has only made a large contribution to the team in one of his four years in the league? Soliai's agent predicts that he will test the open market, but that will be contingent upon the league having a new collective bargaining agreement in place. Still, it is encouraging that this once doubted player has transformed himself into a stalwart.

Eric Weddle was voted to the 2010 All-Pro Second Team defensive unit. Weddle received one vote, which put him in an eight-way tie for the 5th best safety in the NFL (the vote is not broken down by free safety and strong safety).

No one would expect the older and slower Miller to be able guard the younger and quicker Rose, so it isn't surprising that Rose out-scored Miller (by taking 16 more shot attempts). Empty-Handed

Two ProUtes came away empty-handed from Super Bowl XLV. Stevenson Sylvester almost recovered a fumble on Pittsburgh's first punt, but the Packers held onto it. Sly played on special teams but didn't make a tackle. Chris Kemoeatu missed this tackle on Nick Collins as he returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown, putting Green Bay up 14-0. Kemoeatu also missed his block on the play as Howard Green struck Ben Roethlisberger on his release, resulting in the interception. Kemoeatu made a couple of key blocks later in the game: one was a block in the back, which drew a 10 yard penalty, and the other was pulling to open the hole on Rashard Mendenhall's 8 yard TD run in the third quarter. Pittsburgh's O-line played pretty well without injured center Maurkice Pouncey, as the Steelers outgained the Packers in net yards (387 to 338) and rushing yards (126 to 50). They only gave up one sack and converted 53% of their third downs, but they could not sustain the drive in the final two minutes.

Chris Kemoeatu got the upper hand on former teammate Sione Pouha as Pittsburgh's injury-depleted offensive line took control in the first half of the AFC Championship Game. Running back Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 95 yards and a TD as the Steelers rolled to a commanding 24-0 lead. An injury to rookie center Maurkice Pouncey caught up to Pittsburgh in the second half, as a fumbled snap resulted in a safety, Mendenhall was limited to 26 yards, and the Steelers were held scoreless. Pouha came away with 6 tackles and was in pursuit of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as he scrambled to hit Antonio Brown for the first down that clinched it.

Pouha and the Jets lost in the AFC Championship Game for the second straight year, while Kemoeatu will play in his third Super Bowl and rookie Stevenson Sylvester will play in his first.

Alex Smith may be finished in San Francisco, but he kept his poise to the end. Playing without his top running back (injured reserve) and his coach (fired), he stood tall in the pocket and delivered. In a battle of also-rans Smith was 15-29 for 276 yards and 2 TDs in a 38-7 rout of Arizona. The 49ers got 2 of their 6 wins against the Cardinals; it was the second straight sweep of this division opponent. Smith is now a free agent and likely will not be re-signed by the Niners. Hopefully he will get a fresh start with another team next season (if there isn't a lockout).

For playing well until the bitter end Alex Smith wins the ProUte of the Week award ahead of Paul Soliai (6 tackles, fumble recovery) and Eric Weddle (6 tackles, INT, PDef).

Hat's Off

Congratulations to Jordan Gross, who was selected as a starter for the Pro Bowl! That is quite an accomplishment given the major injury that ended his season a year ago and the difficult season the Panthers' offense has endured. It's a testament to the respect he's earned in the league. Gross hasn't been in contention for the ProUte of the Week award as a result of his team's play, but he's the only ProUte to be selected for the Pro Bowl. This marks the second time Gross has been selected (2008).

All Out

Eric Weddle left it all out on the field on Sunday, making 11 solo and 5 assisted tackles. He managed one PDef, but it wasn't enough as Carson Palmer threw 4 TD passes and the Bengals (4-11) knocked the Chargers (8-7) out of playoff contention.

After the game Weddle said "Our season is done. It's probably the worst feeling you can have." Another ProUte of the Week award won't change that, but Weddle deserves it for battling to the end. Hopefully San Diego's management will reward him with the new contract he has earned instead of dumping more money into a conditional player like Vincent Jackson.

Stand Out

The performances were outstanding across the board in week 14; naturally there weren't enough stand out performances in week 15 to warrant a poll or a ProUte of the Week award.

The success of the Atlanta Falcons (12-2, best record in the NFC) has brought up comparisons to the '98 team that finished the season 14-2 and made it to the Super Bowl. That team featured ProUte RB Jamal Anderson (1,846 yards on 410 carries), much like the current squad is built around Michael Turner (1,256 yards on 300 carries through 14 games). The two teams share a lot of similarities (there's even a Jamaal Anderson on the roster), but Mark Bradley, a blogger for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, states that the 2010 team is better overall. I'd say that's a bit premature, considering the season isn't over. Regardless of the outcome, Anderson had a stand out season in '98 with 16 TDs and the most rushing yards in franchise history. Who could forget the "Dirty Bird?"

Stop, Drop, and Roll

David Reed was on fire Monday night. Three Texans tried to stop him, but they dropped and he rolled into the end zone. Reed set a new Ravens record with his 103 yard return to start the second half, and his 233 total return yards is the second highest single-game total in team history. Reed was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance, and he can add ProUte of the Week as well. Reed leads the league averaging nearly 30 yards per return.

It took a tremendous effort to overcome the triumphant return of Alex Smith (17-27, 255 yards, 3 TDs), the dominating interior presence of Sione Pouha (10 tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery), and the tight coverage of Sean Smith (5 tackles, 4 PDef).

Play of the Day

Andrew Bogut had the Play of the Day in the NBA, tipping in an inbounds pass for the game winner against the Pacers. Bogut was only 5-for-14 from the field, but his touch was golden on this perfect pass from Luc Mbah a Moute. He shot a respectable 7-for-10 from the line en route to 17 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.

Week 13 in the NFL was a tough one. Six ProUtes played tough defense in tough losses. Naming the ProUte of the Week is a tough call as a result. Do we recognize Sione Pouha's individual effort leading the Jets with 8 tackles in a 45-3 loss to the Patriots? Or do we go with the overall team effort Miami got from Koa Misi, Sean Smith, and Paul Soliai (4 tackles apiece) in a 13-10 loss to Cleveland?

Eight tackles is a rare feat for an interior lineman like Pouha, but the Patriots broke the century mark in rushing yards and had two rushing TDs. The Dolphins held Peyton Hillis and the Browns to 52 yards rushing and no scores on the ground. If not for Chad Henne's 3 INTs and a blocked FG in the first quarter Miami could have come away with a win. Mark Sanchez also threw 3 INTs for New York, but that was forcing the ball downfield under duress.

Pouha tallied as many tackles as Misi and Soliai combined, but throw in Smith's tackles and the 4x4x4 gets the job done. This marks the second time this season Miami's trio has shared the award. Eric Weddle (6 tackles) and Ma'ake Kemoeatu (5 tackles) were also in the running.

Be Like Dwight

Andrew Bogut was back in the line up Saturday after missing the last five games with back spasms. Dwight Howard (ill with a stomach virus) was missing from the Magic, which left Bogut free to do his best impersonation of Howard. He posted 31 points, 18 rebounds, and 2 blocks in the mismatch. Bogut was 13-of-20 from the field and a Dwight-like 5-of-16 from the line, including eight straight misses in the fourth quarter when Orlando played Hack-a-Buck. Milwaukee held on to beat the depleted Magic (down four sick players), 96-85.

Bogut is averaging 13.1 points and 11.5 rebounds in the 13 games he's played this season. He scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in an 88-78 loss to Miami tonight.

Andre Miller was suspended for "making excessive and unnecessary contact" with Blake Griffin in Portland's 100-91 win over the Clippers on Sunday. I didn't see the play (it isn't in the highlights), but Griffin's a pretty physical player. Are you sure he can't take a bump from an aging point guard? Or has he already reached the superstar status for calls? More likely it was a referee reaction to the flagrant foul, ejection, and two game suspension of L.A.'s Brian Cook. Miller will miss Tuesday's game against Steve Nash and the Suns.

BLOCK THAT KICK!

Brandon Burton's block of Mitch Payne's field goal attempt to seal Utah's 17-16 victory over BYU wasn't the only resounding blocked kick on Saturday; the Las Vegas Locomotives also got a blocked FG to preserve their 23-20 win in the second UFL Championship Game! The Locos defeated the Tuskers for their second consecutive title. Las Vegas has a dynasty! Congratulations to former Utah head coach Jim Fassel and ProUtes Jesse Boone, Brian Hernandez, and Lauvale Sape on winning back-to-back championships!

We will forgo the poll this week and give the ProUte of the Week Award to Eric Weddle, who ran away with one of Peyton Manning's 4 INTs. Weddle returned it 41 yards for a pick six in the 3rd quarter of the Chargers' 36-14 win over the Colts (linebacker Kevin Burnett also had a pick six in the 1st quarter).

Weddle told ESPN that the lack of credit given to San Diego's top ranked defense was "a slap in the face." He played a major part in his team's response, with 4 tackles and 2 pass deflections to go with his INT return for a TD. Here at ProUtes we give credit where credit is due: this is Weddle's third award of the season.

Return With Honor

Utah has had its share of phenomenal kick returners, from Steve Smith to Shaky Smithson. David Reed doesn't share the same initials but he's working his way into that game-changing role. The kick return game has been pivotal this season in the NFL, and Reed is capitalizing on his opportunities. Against the Panthers he returned 3 kicks for 135 yards, with a long of 84 yards. He didn't score six (and was sick later), but he did win ProUte of the Week honors!

Reed edged out teammate Paul Kruger, who recorded his first sack, perennial favorite Eric Weddle (3 tackles, PDef), and Sean Smith (4 tackles) for the award.

Behind the Line

Quarterback Kyle Orton may be the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, but he knows who to thank: his offensive line. Here he is slapping the helmet of #68 Zane Beadles, our ProUte of the Week. Behind the blocking of Beadles and Co. the Broncos amassed 452 net yards, 299 passing and 153 rushing. They didn't allow a sack for the first time this season, and with that protection Orton (4 TDs, no INTs) posted a 131.5 passer rating. The Broncos finally established a ground game with the first 100+ yard performance of the season for a Denver running back. Tim Tebow also got in on the action with a TD pass and a TD run. Even Brady Quinn could have had a good day behind that commanding O-line!

Beadles wins the award for the second time in his rookie season, stonewalling David Reed (3 kick returns for 64 yards), Sean Smith (6 tackles), and Paul Soliai (3 tackles, 1 PDef). Smith and Soliai (along with Koa Misi) will be back in action tonight, as Miami hosts the Bears. Denver will face off with San Diego on Monday night.

Pickin' 'Em Up and Puttin' 'Em Down

Eric Weddle picked up another ProUte of the Week award in week 9. Weddle wraps up these awards like he wraps up ball carriers (8 tackles). He deflects all challengers like he defends passes (2 PDef). This week's poll had five other candidates, but none of them could get by Weddle to reach paydirt. It would take Sione Pouha (4 tackles, PDef) and Sean Smith combined (5 tackles, PDef) to surpass Weddle's numbers. Koa Misi had 6 tackles while Paul Soliai registered 3 tackles and a sack - that might win the award during Weddle's bye week, but not this week. There was a surprise contender on the offensive (and special teams) side: David Reed saw his first action this season. He rushed once for 15 yards and returned two kicks for 44 yards. That's an average of 19.66 yards per play, not bad for a rookie. But no ProUte makes more plays on the field than Eric Weddle.

Week of the DB

It was the Week of the DB in the NFL, as Brice McCain racked up another 5 tackles against Indy, Sean Smith had a tackle, defended two passes, and snagged the first interception of his career, and Eric Weddle had 11 tackles and defended a pass. Even the offensive players turned DB, as Quinton Ganther and Chris Kemoeatu each had a tackle after an interception. You voted and Sean Smith takes the award for his takeaway (see the video here)! Now he and Koa Misi each have one of their own to go with the one they shared.

Steve Smith did all he could to help his team, even returning a punt 8 yards to go with 9 receptions for 85 yards. Maybe he can play a little DB as well (Carolina throws enough interceptions Smith could have plenty of tackles)!

Misi Mixes it Up

Koa Misi won't have to share the ProUte of the Week award - this time it's all his! He seems to be a contender for the award each week and week 7 belongs to him. Misi isn't putting up huge numbers in a single category, but he has been filling up the stat sheet. Against the Steelers he had 2 tackles, half a sack, and a fumble recovery. In his first six games as a pro he has 14 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 2 fumbles recovered. This photo shows his first sack on Trent Edwards; he has also brought down Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers, and Ben Roethlisberger. He recovered a Brett Favre fumble for a touchdown and in this highlight he beats fellow ProUte Chris Kemoeatu to the inside, takes on another blocker, and still falls on the ball after Roethlisberger drops it to the turf (of course the story of the game was the Roethlisberger fumble that Miami didn't recover in the end zone). In a league known as the Not For Long the rookie Misi is making some memorable plays! He wins the award over veterans Jordan Gross, OL (379 net yards, 1 sack allowed), Sean Smith (4 tackles), and Eric Weddle (5 tackles).

In other news, Quinton Ganther is back with the Seattle Seahawks following an injury to fullback Michael Robinson. Gabe Long is back with the Las Vegas Locos, but Josh Savage was released by the Omaha Nighthawks, despite leading the team with 1.5 sacks. He was slowed by a back injury, so they replaced him with Reynaldo Wynn. The Locos and Nighthawks will square off for first place in the UFL.

Weddle Gets His Groove Back

Eric Weddle finally got back to posting the numbers (12 tackles, one pdef) we're used to seeing from the ultra-productive safety in week 6. Weddle got his groove back, even if the Bolts are still looking for the Lightning Thief. This is his first ProUte of the Week award of the season, to go along with the four he won last year.

Four other candidates had noteworthy games: Chris Kemoeatu, OL (378 net yards with no sacks allowed), Koa Misi, LB (3 tackles, 1 sack), Sione Pouha, DL (4 tackles, 1 sack, 1 pdef), and Alex Smith, QB (16-33, 196 yards, 2 TDs, and zero turnovers).

Homecomings

Brett Ratliff is back with the Browns as a back up to rookie Colt McCoy. Ratliff bounced around the practice squads of the Jaguars and the Patriots after he was released by the Browns. Cleveland brought him back as insurance after injuries to starter Jake Delhomme and second-stringer Seneca Wallace thrust third-stringer McCoy into action against the Steelers.

Receiver Brent Casteel, another player released by Cleveland, is back in Utah as a new member of the Blaze (AFL). The Blaze also signed former Utes quarterback Tommy Grady and lineman Garrett Smith.

Number One with a Bullet

Embattled quarterback Alex Smith is our ProUte of the Week. The boo birds were out in Candlestick Park, and detractors will say "How can he win the award when he can't win a game?" and "Pretty sad if that's the best Utah has to offer!" Those people are so focused on the few negative plays Smith made they can't see all the positive plays. Yes, he threw two more interceptions (the last one while getting drilled) to add to his league-leading tally of nine. But he also threw three TD passes, two in the fourth quarter. The fumble (which was returned for a TD) was atrocious, but fluke plays like that happen. Frank Gore fumbled twice in the game, but you didn't hear the crowd chanting for his back up. Philip Rivers isn't taking as much flak for his fumble (which was also returned for a TD) late in the Chargers' loss to the Raiders. Tony Romo threw for career high yards against the Titans, but his last pass of the game was an INT (his third), just like Smith's.

Critics aren't impressed with Smith, the former top pick, but analysts are. Just ask Peter King. He threw for 309 yards with some pinpoint precision. He deserved to be chewed out by Coach Singletary and he responded. The coach and the team still believe in him, according to this report on 49ers.com. This blogger still believes in him, too.

The costly mistakes downgraded his game from great to good, but it was good enough to win ProUte of the Week honors over Sione Pouha (5 tackles as the Jets held AP under 100) and Eric Weddle (4 tackles).

Triple D

Two teammates will share this week's ProUte award as Koa Misi (1 tackle, 1 sack) and Sean Smith (5 tackles) tied in the voting. Although the Dolphins lost to the Patriots 41-14, the final score doesn't tell the whole story. Miami's defense only allowed two touchdowns, held Randy Moss without a catch, and limited Tom Brady to 146 net passing yards. Paul Soliai also contributed a tackle for the Dolphins D.

Miami is the only team in the league with three active ProUtes, all on the same side of the ball. Carolina has two active players (although Steve Smith is out with a high ankle sprain) and one on the practice squad, while Baltimore and San Francisco both have two active and one on injured reserve.

Tales of Beadles the Guard

ProUte honors go to a rookie for the second time in as many weeks. Zane Beadles and the Broncos offensive line allowed only one sack in 57 pass attempts, allowing quarterback Kyle Orton to throw for a career-high 476 yards. Against a pass rush that includes perennial Pro Bowlers Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis (who combined for 6 sacks in their first two games) that is truly a commendable performance.

Beadles played tackle at Utah, but the Broncos drafted him to be a guard. Injuries to the line moved him back out to tackle, where the rookie is holding his own. Zane is versatile enough to play either position and intelligent enough to move in to center if need be.

The Broncos didn't get the W, but Beadles gets the award over fellow O-line #68 Chris Kemoeatu (387 total yards, 201 rushing, 0 sacks), Ma'ake Kemoeatu (5 tackles), and Eric Weddle (6 tackles).

In other news, Quinton Ganther was released by the Seattle Seahawks to make room on the roster for former Denver wideout Brandon Stokely. Perhaps Ganther will follow LenDale White yet again and team up with Beadles in Denver!

Sylvester Sets the Tone

Stevenson Sylvester set the tone for the Steelers on Sunday, forcing a fumble on a kick return. It was the first of seven takeaways in the game, a 19-11 win over the Titans. Sylvester, a rookie third-string linebacker (who wears #55 now), made the most of his time on the field, collecting three tackles to go with his FF. Sly also collected the ProUte of the Week Award!

His forced fumble may not have been as high profile as Koa Misi's fumble recovery for a touchdown, but Misi (another rookie LB who wears #55) was the beneficiary of that play. Sylvester caused the fumble. And he had three tackles to Misi's two, despite playing fewer downs than Misi. To see the video replays of their exploits, see Monday's post titled Fumble!

Also in the running for week two's award were Sione Pouha (6 tackles to lead the Jets), Steve Smith (3 rec., 66 yards, TD), and Eric Weddle (5 tackles and .5 sack).

New Look Locos

The Locos are back for their second season in the UFL with new uniforms, a new starting quarterback, and a new roster with only three ProUtes. The fledgling league overhauled its image between seasons, an upgrade so drastic it apparently required a fashion show. Stay tuned for America's Next Top Football Model! I mock, but at least one of my predictions came true: last year's merchandise has become obsolete.

Some teams changed their monikers along with their uniforms. The California Redwoods are now the Sacramento Mountain Lions and the New York Sentinels became the Hartford Colonials. The league is also expanding, adding the Omaha Nighthawks this season and a team in Virginia later.

No ProUtes parlayed their play into a second stint in the NFL (a second accurate prediction), although John Madsen came close. He and Gabe Long have not returned for year two. That leaves Las Vegas with Jesse Boone, Brian Hernandez, and Lauvale Sape on the roster.

The new look did not avail the Locos as they lost to the Florida Tuskers in the season opener.

Louie Sakoda was released today by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He signed with Winnipeg after being dropped by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but an injured calf prevented him from suiting up.

Fumble!

Utah had no trouble handling New Mexico on Saturday, but they did have some trouble handling the ball. They had four fumbles in the game and lost three, one of which was returned for a TD. Against an opponent like New Mexico that isn't too costly, but against a team like Air Force or TCU it could be devastating.

A pair of rookie ProUtes were on the other side of fumbles this weekend. Stevenson Sylvester made the most of his time on the field, forcing a fumble on a kick return. Pittsburgh had seven takeaways in their 19-11 win over the Titans.

Koa Misi fell on a Favre fumble in the end zone, resulting in a touchdown that ultimately proved to be the difference in Miami's 14-10 upset of Minnesota.

Pouncin' Pouha

Sione Pouha came out of the pile with two recovered fumbles and the ProUte of the Week Award! Pouncin' Pouha had 7 tackles in a stout effort against the Ravens in the first game of the 2010 season, but it was the pair of fumble recoveries that set him apart (watch the video here) . Sione also won the award in week 6 of the 2009 campaign, making this his second overall. With Kris Jenkins out for the season Pouha will have to up his productivity. He's off to a good start, beating Brice McCain (7 tackles), Koa Misi (4 tackles, 1 sack), and Steve Smith (5 catches, 75 yards, TD) for week one honors.

Practice Squad

Freddie Brown, Brett Ratliff and R.J. Stanford were relegated to the practice squad as NFL teams cut down to their final 53 man rosters this weekend. Brown was waived by the Bengals during the summer, then brought into the Vikings' camp to fill in for injured players. Ratliff was waived by the Browns later than expected, then signed by the Jaguars. Stanford showed some promising plays for the Panthers, but was the odd man out of the crowd. Kelly Talavou (Ravens) joined Martail Burnett (49ers) on IR and is done for the season.

David Reed secured a spot on the Ravens' roster with his sure hands and kick returning ability. Baltimore waived Demetrius Williams prior to the deadline, then traded Mark Clayton to St. Louis when they signed free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Reed is now listed as a third-string receiver behind Derrick Mason and Donte Stallworth, as well as the second-string kick returner (Stallworth is out with an injury, but Houshmandzadeh has yet to be added to the depth chart).

Quinton Ganther's DUI stop did not stop him from making the Seahawks as a first-string fullback and fourth-string running back. Robert Johnson made Tennessee's team, beating out fellow rookie (and Rhodes scholar) Myron Rolle, and Stevenson Sylvester earned one of many linebacker spots with Pittsburgh.

Most Improved

Rookie's Ride

There is a nice profile of Robert Johnson on Titans Online, although Kyle Meacham did make one glaring factual error. Utah's humbling of Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl was not the first BCS bowl victory by a non-BCS school. That would be Utah's dismantling of Pittsburgh in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. At that time a non-automatic qualifier had to finish in the top 6 in the BCS rankings to earn a berth in a BCS bowl game. Another game was added and the rule was subsequently changed to a top 12 finish. Utah was the original BCS Buster and the first team to bust in twice. The Utes have one more chance to do it again this year before they join the PAC-10.

Off Season

It's been a disappointing off-season for three ProUtes: Freddie Brown, Martail Burnett, and Quinton Ganther. Brown was waived by the Bengals at the end of July, then signed by the Vikings to take some reps while other receivers recover. Burnett injured his left knee and was waived by the 49ers. The team placed him on injured reserve once he cleared waivers. Ganther, pictured here being tackled by a former Tennessee teammate in a recent preseason game, followed his running backs coach from Washington to Seattle. The running back position is still unsettled in Seattle, with LenDale White (another of Ganther's former Tennessee teammates) getting released by his old college coach, Pete Carroll. Ganther was arrested for DUI in Sacramento this summer. He had a hearing on Wednesday, which did not prevent him from playing this weekend. He may yet make the team, pending any legal or league-imposed discipline.

Training Camp

Training camps open this week in the NFL. Of the six ProUtes drafted this year only the first one taken, Koa Misi, has yet to sign a contract. Misi has been impressive in workouts thus far, and the Dolphins open camp on the 30th. The Baltimore Ravens got started yesterday, and David Reed has been seen catching everything thrown his way. Reed is competing with Mark Clayton for the 4th receiver spot. R.J. Stanford and the Carolina Panthers began their camp today. Stevenson Sylvester and the Steelers report on the 30th. Robert Johnson and the Tennessee Titans will get underway on the 31st. Zane Beadles just signed his contract with the Denver Broncos yesterday. Denver's training camp officially opens August 1st.

Throw the Flag

In addition to attending the University of Utah, Steve Smith and I have something else in common: we have both broken our left arms twice. I broke mine in elementary school one year apart, and Smith broke his twice in one year playing football. He got credit for scoring a touchdown after breaking it against the Giants (see post on 12/28/09), but he's taking criticism for breaking it a second time playing flag football. It's not the smartest move he's made in his well-documented career, but the only person who has a legitimate complaint about him playing flag football is the guy who had to cover him! His contract does not grant the Carolina Panthers total ownership of his body, and they have wisely decided not to penalize him for what amounts to a freak accident, according to this release from the Associated Press. The break is not in the same spot, and Smith won't miss any part of the regular season, just the preseason.

Chris Shelton has been out of action since May 30th and remains on the 7 day Disabled list with a hamstring injury. Former Utah pitcher Jordan Whatcott signed a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies this week and was assigned to the Gulf Coast League. According to John Coon of the Deseret News there are now seven former Utes in the minor leagues: Jay Brossman, Brian Budrow, Stephen Fife, Ryan Khoury, Shelton, Jesse Shriner, and Whatcott. Brossman was last seen on the 7 day DL with the Arkansas Travelers, Fife pitches for the Portland Sea Dogs, and Shriner plays catcher for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

Olevao Back with the Blaze

The Utah Blaze announced that they have re-signed Kautai Olevao, a LB/FB who played for the Blaze from 2006-2008. Olevao delivered the greatest hit I have witnessed in Utah's rivalry with BYU when he leveled fleet-footed RB Ronney Jenkins, who coughed up the ball and a lung. Check it out:

Make Room for Ma'ake

Ma'ake Kemoeatu has a lot on his plate, even for a 345 lb. self-described "big fat guy." He's trying to come back from an Achilles tendon injury that kept him off the field last season, and he's doing it with a new team that's transitioning to a 3-4 front. According to this article on redskins.com Kemoeatu could be the first nose tackle in the proud history of the Hogs. Albert Haynesworth doesn't want the job, so make room for Ma'ake!

Supporting Cast

Andrew Bogut was back in the states this week, getting his cast removed and partying with his supporting cast known as "Squad 6." Bogut, who earned third team all-NBA honors this season, has been spending the off-season in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia. He's healing, but not in time to lead the Boomers at the FIBA World Championship in August.

Luke Nevill is also in Melbourne, playing for the Melbourne Tigers of the NBL. Nevill was a member of the Boomers squad in 2009 but does not appear to be on the roster for the World Championship.

Savage on the Move

Josh Savage has played for a number of teams in his career: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, and Florida Tuskers. Add to that list the Omaha Nighthawks, which selected him in the recent UFL expansion draft.

Omaha also took a pair of defensive tackles from the Las Vegas Locomotives, which could spell more playing time for Lauvale Sape and Gabe Long. The Locos protected Jesse Boone and Sape (who is currently playing with the Utah Blaze of the AFL) from the expansion draft. Long is a free agent following his workout with the Detroit Lions in December.

Tight end John Madsen also had a workout with the Lions last week, but was released on Friday and remains a free agent.

Home Run Homer

Chris Shelton was right at home in Spring Mobile Ballpark yesterday, hitting his first home run out of the park since he played there in college. The Round Rock Express beat the Salt Lake Bees for the second time, with two games remaining in the home stand. The Express have struggled on the road, but this is a homecoming of sorts for Shelton, who leads the team in HR (5) and RBI (20).

Plenty to Prove

Enough talk about how far quarterbacks Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy fell in the draft. Let's talk about something that really matters: what it means to Brett Ratliff. The third-string Browns qb is the only holdover from the purge that sent Brady Quinn and his hair to the Shadow of Tebow in Denver and Derek Anderson to Arizona, where he will compete with another pretty boy, Matt Leinart. The Rat abides. But will he play? In his career as an undrafted free agent he hasn't taken a snap in the regular season, but he had a nice preseason for the Jets, prompting Coach Mangini to bring him over to Cleveland in the trade for Braylon Edwards. Clearly this is a guy the coach wants in his locker room, but not necessarily on the field. Cleveland brought in Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace presumably as the #1 and #2 qbs, then drafted Colt McCoy. Free agent Graham Harrell has been getting some reps in camp as well. According to The Chronicle-Telegram Ratliff could remain with the team as the fourth-string quarterback. So he goes from last man standing to last on the list? Here's hoping McCoy continues to fall.

Another player who seems to have fallen out of favor is Paul Soliai in Miami. As high as the Dolphins are on Koa Misi (see Peter King's recent Monday Morning Quarterback), Soliai's name hasn't even come up as Miami looks to revamp their defense. Jason Ferguson has been suspended for 8 games, apparently opening a double-wide door for Soliai to step in as a starter for at least half the season, but the only names coming out of camp are Randy Starks and rookie Jared Odrick. The Palm Beach Post spoke with Soliai's new agent, who said Paul is ready to prove he can play. Let's see if the ProUte of Week 8 can play at that level every week!

Misi to Miami

Koa Misi was the first ProUte selected in the 2010 NFL Draft, followed five picks later by Zane Beadles. Both players were taken in the second round of the new three day draft format, making this the second consecutive year Utah has had two players drafted in the second round. Misi went to Miami at #40, and the Broncos picked Beadles at #45. Misi becomes the third ProUte on Miami's defense, joining last year's second round pick Sean Smith and Paul Soliai. If only they would bring back Steve Fifita! Like Paul Kruger, Misi will transition from defensive end to outside linebacker in the NFL. Unlike Kruger, Misi will be expected to contribute immediately according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. Three more Utes were drafted in the fifth round on Saturday. Robert Johnson will carry on the proud tradition of ProUtes playing for the Titans, David Reed goes to the Ravens (the team that cut free agent Bradon Godfrey last year), and Stevenson Sylvester's a Steeler!

NBA Playoffs

Andre Miller tied his playoff career high of 31 points to lead Portland to a 105-100 upset win over Phoenix. Portland, a 6 seed, pulled off the only win by a visiting team in game 1 thanks to Andre's 31 points and 8 assists.

The Blazers managed to win without star Brandon Roy, but the Bucks didn't fare so well minus Andrew Bogut. They fell behind by a wide margin and lost to the Hawks 102-92.

In the D League Luke Nevill and the Utah Flash had their season come to an end in the first round of the playoffs. They took the first game against the Iowa Energy but lost the best-of-three series. Nevill averaged 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in his first year in the developmental league.

Minor League Assignments

Looking for your favorite ProUtes on the baseball diamond? Brian Budrow, Ryan Khoury, and Chris Shelton have all been reassigned this season. Budrow is pitching for the South Bend Silver Hawks, the class A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Khoury has gone from the Portland Sea Dogs to the Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston's triple A affiliate. Shelton is now in the Houston Astros organization, currently assigned to the triple A Round Rock Express.

Utah Man in the Arena

Arena Football returns to action tonight, but I have to say I'm not as excited to follow the Utah Blaze now that I can no longer find Jason Boone or Derrek Richards on the roster. The only connection to the University of Utah on the team is Brett Elliott, the quarterback who lost his starting spot to Alex Smith due to injury. Elliott then transferred to Linfield, a Div. III school where he excelled, winning a national championship and setting all kinds of records. He signed with the San Diego Chargers as a free agent, then joined the AFL. Now that the league is back Elliott is back in Utah.

Tommy Grady, a qb who did not enjoy similar success after transferring from Oklahoma to Utah, returns to his roots as a member of the Oklahoma City Yard Dogz.

The player I'm most excited to see back on the field is Steve Fifita, one of the heroes of the Fiesta Bowl. Fifita spent a couple of years with the Miami Dolphins but didn't have the size for the NFL. He does have a non-stop motor, which may be a better fit for Arena Football anyhow! He plays for the Alabama Vipers.

One player who will not be returning with the revived AFL is Phil Glover, but that's probably for the best. Some guys don't know when to walk away from the game while they still can!

Bad Break

Andrew Bogut broke his right hand, sprained his wrist, and dislocated his elbow when he fell in Saturday's game against the Suns. The big fella got out on the fast break, threw it down with two hands, then fell and broke his hand. It's gruesome to watch on the replay and I won't post it or link to it here. It's sickening to watch and sickening because it forces an early end to what had been a breakout season for the big Buck. Bogut had 12 points in just 12 minutes against Phoenix, on 6-of-7 shooting. A big man ought to be rewarded for hustling down the floor like he did, not drop to the floor like he did. That's just not right. His team went on to win the game without him, but the injury is a serious blow to Milwaukee's playoff hopes.

Sims Signs, Smith the Spokesman

Barry Sims signed a one-year contract with the 49ers yesterday, returning to a reserve role. The 11 year veteran provides consistency and experience for an emerging young offense.

The Carolina Panthers are revamping their offense and getting younger on both sides of the ball. Steve Smith has always been outspoken, but now his role as team spokesman is official: he is the union rep for the Panthers. Smith's comments about the Panthers' personnel moves are somewhat more calculated and less candid than we're used to hearing from the vocal wide out. Is Steve Smith going corporate on us?

Bogut's Bucks

Andrew Bogut came up big for the Bucks again last night scoring 25 points, snagging 17 rebounds, and swatting 4 shots to lead Milwaukee to a 86-84 win over Boston. The Bucks have now won 10 of their last 11 games, climbing from 9th to 5th in the Eastern Conference, and their success is squarely on the seven-footer's shoulders. I recall a conversation dating back to before Bogut was drafted with someone who will remain as nameless as he was clueless when he said Bogut wouldn't make a good pro player. It has taken the former #1 pick a few years to overcome some injuries and other setbacks, but he's no Michael Olowakandi! He's one of the top centers in the Eastern Conference, and Bogut's Bucks are a contender!
